DO
YOUR HOMEWORK
Before
you decide to introduce a Utonagan puppy into your
life give all these facts good consideration:
The
Utonagan is a large, intelligent and very active
dog, and as with all puppies, needs toilet training,
needs to chew when teething (which actually goes
on until a dog is at least 18months), needs training,
exercise, and a lot of hard work and time. The Utonagan
needs company, be it yourself or other pets and
will not usually settle left by themselves, they
are a breed that can suffer badly from separation
anxiety and find it very stressful being left alone.
Due
to the size of the Utonagan it is very advisable
to get to training classes as soon as possible to
socialise your dog and to instil firm but encouraging
boundaries. You may find yourself with a handful
when puppy is fully grown and still acting like
a puppy, people don’t take kindly to a “mugging”
from a huge dog. So boundaries should be set at
an early age to ensure that you and your Utonagan
can have a responsible and fun time together.
When
enquiring about purchasing a puppy you should phone
as many people as possible, being aware that not
all breeders are genuine lovers of the breed, there
are a lot of “chancers” out there passing
off cross breeds as a Utonagan with false paperwork.
All recognised affiliations with the Utonagan breed
will hold genuine records and pedigrees and registration
Documents. Check who your breeder is registered
with and phone them to check. We are all here to
help.
You
should always be able to see the mother of the puppies,
and full paperwork and pictures of the father if
he himself is owned by another party. You should
also be able to visit puppy in the breeders home
before you agree that this is the dog you would
like, NEVER should you purchase any dogs if this
is not the case.
All
genuine Utonagan puppies should be DNA profiled
and records held at the Kennel Club, a copy of certificate
should be given to you, they should also all be
micro-chipped, vet checked, insured and eye screened(if
possible) by the breeder before you purchase your
puppy.
