For
the sake of convenience the male pronoun has been used throughout
this statement, its provisions apply to members of either
sex. Except where apparent the word “dog” applies
to both sexes.
This code applies with equal weight to both the breeder
of the litter and the stud dog owner.
All
breeding should be aimed at the improvement of the breed.
Before breeding a litter, equal weight should be given to
type, temperament, health and soundness. The hope of financial
gain should not be of primary consideration.
No
bitch should be bred from until she is 2 years old, and
should always have a full season between litters. No bitch
should be bred after the age of 7 years old or have more
than 4 litters.
Members
should discourage breeding from clearly inferior specimens,
and the owner of the stud dog should refuse to use these
specimens. Aggressive dogs should not be bred from they
are not satisfactory pets or breeding stock.
The
aim should be that the dogs used should have a satisfactory
hip score and be well within the breed average, and should
be BVA eye tested results available for BUA and owners of
a prospective mate.
Members
who have bred puppies with a problem that a vet classifies
as hereditary or if they have a serious divergence to breed
standard should make their findings public, and make the
BUA and progeny owners aware of this, Stud owners should
agree to this also.
Any
member undertaking breeding should have the facilities to
take back any puppies and/or re-home them suitably

dogs or puppies should be sold to a pet shop, laboratory,
dealer.
Puppies
should not leave the dam until they are 8 weeks old and
fully weaned.
Prospective
buyers should be screened and informed of the true nature
of the Utonagan, feeding, training, worming, etc and should
be shown an adult specimen of the breed.
New
owners should sign a contract stipulating breeding endorsements
with an explanation to what they are and the procedures
involved in lifting them.
Puppies
should all be micro-chipped and DNA profiled before they
leave the breeder, recorded with the BUA.
No
puppy which has any known defect or showing any departure
from breed standard should be sold without the purchaser
being made fully aware of such and any possible consequences.
Each
purchaser should be provided at time of sale with: pedigree,
diet sheet, info on inoculations, wormers, training and
Registration certificate with endorsements - change of ownership
papers and free membership.
It
should be stressed to all purchasers that they should contact
the breeder with any problems there may be with the puppy
and the breeder must be of assistance
